The Nintendo Switch 2 is turning the gaming industry on its head, and if you enjoyed the first one, you’re in for some thrilling upgrades. Nintendo is introducing premium versions of old favorites and new releases, ensuring your favorite games are crisper, smoother to play, and include more features on the new console.
What is a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition?
The company introduced a new version of a few specific games labeled as “Nintendo Switch 2 Edition”. These editions come with the original game bundled, along with an upgrade pack that will access the true power of the Switch 2. Depending on the specific game, the upgraded one will include better graphics and a few even new features, and additional modes. The bad part is that the upgrades are only available when playing on new, specifically Switch 2 hardware.
If you already have a game on the original Switch—digital or physical—you can obtain the new experience, nonetheless, by purchasing an upgrade pack from the Nintendo eShop, My Nintendo Store, or store retailers. You will continue to be able to play the standard game on your original console, but the new features are reserved for the Switch 2.
Big Games Getting the Switch 2 Upgrade
Nintendo isn’t afraid to bring its biggest franchises to the Switch 2 generation. Some of the standout features are:
Super Mario Party Jamboree
The fan favorite gets a serious overhaul. The new “Jamboree TV” features mouse controls, microphone use, and even camera support, according to IGN. There is a new team mode, Bowser Live, that supports full-body motion and audio, and Carnival Coaster adds new minigames with mouse control. Graphics are sharp, in WQ1440p in TV mode and full HD on handheld and tabletop modes. The upgrade pack will be priced at $16.99 or €19.99, and the full Switch 2 Edition will launch on July 24, 2025, for $79.99.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom
Both titles are getting upgraded versions, with fresh depth and sheen. According to IGN, new features of Voice Memories make storytelling more interesting, and other added features include GPS-style maps, daily bonuses, item sharing, and a photo studio, making the gameplay experience of the world better. The upgrades of the Switch 2 also incorporate HDR support, sharper visuals, smoother performance, and faster loading. It will retail for $10 for users. The upgrades will be free for users of Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. Both releases will come on June 5, 2025.
Kirby and the Forgotten Land
Kirby’s new adventure will feature a new story mode named Star-Crossed World, new Mouthful Modes, and enhanced visuals. The Switch 2 Edition releases on August 28, 2025, for $79.99, or separately, you can grab the upgrade pack for £16.99 or €19.99.
Metroid Prime 4: Beyond
Metroid fans have something in store for them. The next-generation version of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond will feature Joy-Con 2 mouse control, improved resolution, faster loads, and improved textures. You have two play modes: Quality Mode provides 4K 60fps HDR docked and 1080p 60fps HDR handheld, and Performance Mode provides up to 120fps at reduced resolutions. Pricing and release details are yet to come, but the release is anticipated later in 2025.
Pokémon Legends: Z-A
Not much is known yet, but Nintendo has already confirmed the Switch 2 Edition will feature enhanced visuals, improved frame rates, and better overall performance. Stay tuned for more information around its later 2025 release.
Other Games Getting the Upgrade Treatment
A number of other games are also receiving Switch 2 Editions or free updates. These are Sid Meier’s Civilization VII, Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar, Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma, and Shadow Labyrinth. Some will be offered for free, but others will cost money to obtain via an upgrade pack.
How to Upgrade: Free vs. Paid
Nintendo’s going with a flexible approach to the Switch 2 transition. Some games—ARMS, Big Brain Academy: Brain vs. Brain, and Super Mario Odyssey—receive free updates that boost performance or introduce features such as GameShare. Others, like Kirby and the Forgotten Land and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, need a paid upgrade to access all the new content and improvements. As Nintendo World Report states, free updates tend to provide small enhancements, while paid upgrades deliver the big changes.
What’s Better in a Switch 2 Edition
These revised editions aren’t just about glamming up games, though the graphics will be tidier and the performance slicker. Many games are also bringing in completely new modes, improved multiplayer features, and support for the Switch 2’s new features. Super Mario Party Jamboree, for example, features new input controls like mouse and microphone, and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond features performance options based on gameplay type.
Why Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack Matters
Why it matters: For a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscriber, this news means more bang for your buck. Upgrade packs for games like Zelda will be free and included in the subscription, meaning that anyone who wants to get as much as they can from their Switch 2 will be rewarded with savings.
What does this mean for Nintendo fans?
Nintendo’s approach with Switch 2 upgrades is about giving players more options. A free performance boost or a paid upgrade that includes brand-new features—you name it, they’ve got it. A mix of visual improvements, new features in gameplay, and enhanced functionality makes the Switch 2 so much more than an update to hardware—it’s the chance to see your favorite games in an entirely new way.
